A made man

IMG_2404
LensCrafters were able to finsh my sunglasses yesterday. So, I picked them up this morning. Very, very nice. Too bad it's a grey dreary day outside. Now I guess I'll have to get in the habit of carrying them around with me.

Watched the first two episodes of RETURN TO THE PLANET OF THE APES. It gave me nightmares. Talk about your limited animation. Whoo boy. Still, it was fun to spot the differences between Doug Wildley's drawings and Jack Kirby's. Jack's stuff is just a bit more cartoony. Very effective stuff.

I also enjoyed watching IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU WHAT WILL HORSES DO? There are some great bits about how cartoons are evil that I MUST use in HELL. And mix it up with THE FLYING HOUSE and SUPERBOOK.

inkling

sketchpile35
Should've done this a year ago, but I finally made it to LensCrafters and got new glasses. Well, I got the order in. With my stigmitism it has to be specially made. So, in two weeks (or so) I'll have new glasses and sun glasses. And it'll only set me back six hundred bucks. Oh well. It had to be done.

Want to draw and such but the well's coming up dry. I'm more frustrated by that then my lack of ability to draw. Crap.

Got the RETURN TO THE PLANET OF THE APES animated series on DVD today. Looking forward to seeing it again. Also, TEEN WOLF animated on VHS. I'm expecting real pain. I wonder if I can find those old tapes with the animated DUMB AND DUMBER on 'em?

White noise

The AnimeHELL.org domain got renewed for another year. So that's covered.

Let's see, lots of other crap I need to get nailed to the wall. Getting head spins just thinking about it. Ah well. Do what I can and can what I don't.

Got some DVDs from Shocking Video yesterday. Watched GOD'S ANGRY MAN, a documentary about Dr. Gene Scott by Werner Herzog. Amazing stuff. Highly recommended.

Getting up to Speed

OtakuHELL at AKon16

I originally planned to do an episode by episode review of THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SPEED RACER, but lord they're bad. I'm thinking instead I'll just rant about what's wrong with TNAOSR, which will fill some space. Especially with Screen Grabs.

And maybe the lyrics to that opening theme song, too.

I'm planning a follow up where I'll compare Speed Racer to VIVA LOS VEGAS and SPINOUT. With lots and lots of screen caps. I'll need to borrow Joshua's Elvis box set.

And hey! Next weekend! New Doctor Who!

Waiting to be forgotten

I've put a link to my box.net public box. A nice little tool for sharing files with everybody. I'll put the AnimeHELL flyers and PGzines and mini comics in this online storage and let everybody have access. A nice deal if you ask me. Best solution for now. Unless I find a better online storage provider...

I also have a MediaMax account where I could host 25GB of files. In fact I think I'll move the files off my work desktop to that account. It's not as friendly as box.net, but it's a nice service. For FREE.

MobMov: the mobile movie guerilla drive-in and street marketing

MobMov: the mobile movie guerilla drive-in and street marketing: "Introduction

The mobile movie project has grown far beyond my wildest imaginations. What started as a hair-brained concept, first turned into something for friends to enjoy, and then quickly sparked an international interest. With humble intentions in saying so, now people from around the world are asking me how they can too start their own. Here we are and this is that.

What is a mobmov?

If you've gotten this far I probably don't need to answer this question. But in case you're completely new to the concept, and decided you want to start a mobmov just because you liked the name “mobmov”, here's a quick primer:"

Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In

Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In: "Start Your Own Guerilla Drive-In

Guerilla Drive-Ins are springing up everywhere from LA to NY, in big cities and little towns. People are rejecting the idea of the $10 movie (twenty with popcorn and a soda) and embracing the idea of the do-it-yourself movie free to the community."

Don't get cute

IMG_2666
While throwing out a boxload of crap I found an early unfinished mini comic I'd done called UNEXPECTED DEATH FUNNIES. It was a bunch of single gags of the grim reaper showing up unexpectedly. You get the idea. No wonder I never finished it. I still like that title though. Other mini comics titles to consider: TALES TO ENRAGE and PERSISTENT TALES. Ok, enough of that...

Dallas - News - Expatriate - dallasobserver.com: "Expatriate
Forbidden Media heads north looking for a better climate--in Denton of all places
By Shannon Sutlief
Published: January 30, 2003

Visitors to Forbidden Media are used to finding something unexpected, out of the ordinary and, sometimes, a little shocking among the store's selection of videos, books and posters on Exposition Avenue near the gates to Fair Park. They would go there in search of items not available at chain stores, and the diverse collection included copies of the original The Ring by Japanese director Hideo Nakata, the DVD of Bumfights, The Anarchist's Cookbook, Bettie Page pinups, UFO theories by Jim Marrs, anime, classic exploitation films and art books by Mark Ryden."

Found this while doing some sprig cleaning. Strange that this never showed up before in my earlier searches...

Fresh scans are being prepped for posting. I've even uploaded a few to WebComics Nation. Now to see if that works.

Update:
It works.

Deadbloggage

Sketchbook Slush
Just looking through the archives of this blog I see alot of missing images. Stuff that used to be stored at animehell.org before Start Logic deleted the account. I need to go through and remove those empty posts or at least try to recover the missing bits. The same with the AnimeHELL archives. Too many missing images. Way past time to clean it all up.

Time consuming and all.

I started pulling together a few movie trailers for future HELLs last night. I got a few ideas for some mix possibilities. Gotta get me some flash animation going...

Keep on fighting

Page of Stuff
Trying to work on a mini comic for Free Mini Comic Day and all that. And I'm drawing and inking and lettering and not too happy with what's filling the pages. So, who knows? Maybe this'll result in something passable, or maybe something good. Gotta keep at it.

Started to do some spring cleaning. I got alot of crap I need to throw out or bring down to Paperbacks Plus. Gotta keep that up, too.

Gotta get something up on the AnimeHELL blog, too. I'm slacking off.

And then there's the PGzine for SukuraCon. I should just slap it together and post it as is. Nobody seems to care about it besides me and Hillsy.

No Sleep 'til Dallas

IMG_1048
Had some very Dickensesque nightmares on Saturday night, very little sleep was to be had with that going on in my head. And now it seems I'm unable to get any sleep the last few nights, maybe I'm worried about being revisited?

Crap. Need to get more work done.

Amazing Nuts

runbabyrun-beating
The Amazing Nuts Special Edition just arrived in the post from CDJapan. That was really quick. Of course it was pricey, too. Shipping by airmail always gives me sticker shock. But it's the cheapest was to ship from Japan, at least from CDJapan.

Gotta watch it tonight!

Found a tool to demux MKVs, hopefully I can rip the subs from the fansubs of Kung Fu Girl and Global Astroliner and remux them into a DVD for HELL. The higher the quality the source the better.

I was thinking about doing a "From Danno's Video Vault" thing where I'd take a snapshot of a VHS/DVD case from the collection and do a write up about it. Not necessarily a review of the video, but a story of how I got the video and/or who turned me on to it. Just a thought.

Not where I wanna be

danno
It's Friday and I've got an itch. Don't wanna work, don't wanna sleep, don't wanna watch a movie. Don't really know what I wanna do, but what I'm doing ain't it.

Frustration. Spinning wheels and all.

Taking Knubb to the vet today. Trying to get rid of the worms. Sometime I need to go to Lens Crafters and get my damn glasses made. Always something. Never bored. Too much to do.

Need to start making discs for Surat this week, too. And mail off the Zambot 3 discs to Chris. And there's New Dotch to be made, too. And I need to get working on making Nodame discs for Clarine and Bruce and Josh. Much work to be done.

Been thinking about a Googi Googolplex minicomic. There's something there. God knows I suck at this kind of crap. But Googi is different, maybe because It's a throw away concept. I don't have much investment in the concept. Lord am I lame.

I had an idea for an Awa No Emi comic, too. But I'd have to clear it with Bruce, first.

Hans on

Mundee was in some discomfort, but was otherwise in good spirits. Bruce was beaming with pride. And Hans? Well, he was indifferent to the whole deal. He slept the whole time we visited. I held him for maybe 5 minutes and Hans sucked his lower lip and made a face when he burped. But that was all he did. Hans was the calm at the center of the storm of boisterous loud visitors.

It all made me a bit sad. Poor kid, coming into this world that wants to chew you up. I hope he can make it.

AnimeHELL

AnimeHELL at Ning...

Hello Hans

IMG_1028
Hans came into the world this morning. And I expect everything to change from now on. Work will be a differnt place now. And It should be interesting. And different.

They have something called Free Mini Comic Day now. It's like Free Comic Book Day, but only with Mini Comics. That's funny. But not a bad deal, in a way. It's not like I ever charge for any of the zines or comics I've done. Well, save for JUKU. So, I spend the money to print up a batch of Minis, and then spend more money shipping the Minis to the Free Mini Comic Day people who then somehow get comic book stores to order the minis? I guess? The submission page seems a bit confusing. But I think you're submitting your completed Minis to them to distro. 25 to 75 of them. Ok. Well, it's May 5th. So, it may be doable. I'll have to think about it. The deadline is April 23rd.

And Free Zine Day is also May 5th, too. Funny that. Except I'm not sure how that one works, either. Yet somehow all this is tied in with Free Comic Book Day, so maybe the zines will be handed out at Comic Book Stores. I guess.

I'm hoping that I'll be hanging out with Josh and Michael for FCBD, doing CAPE at Titan, like last year.

I really really need to get back to drawing more. And maybe finish some comix, too.

While working on the 8th Man write up I decided to break it down to single episode reviews. I'm thinking that I can generate more content that way, and mine more comedy gold from the source material. Just like they do on the TVSquad blog. An episode at a time. I can do this with Prince Planet and those Ultra Man DVD box sets, too. It's a plan!

UPDATE:Got the WEP key and plugged it into the connection and joy of joys it works. I was even able to open AnimeHELL.org in the PSP browser. Sweet. Time to set up some RSS channels and see what else I can find. Trouble trouble!

Framed out

IMG_2423

Topics to write up:
Joi Lansing
Lolita No. 18
Guitar Wolf
The Ramones
Spectra Man
Prince Planet

And that's all that's coming to mind right now.

Finally got all the 8th Man tapes transfered to DVD. Need to find all the "Energy Tube" scenes and do some screen caps and make some animated gifs.

Josh picked up a new JVC DV video camera at Fry's yesterday. And we talked about him filming the shows. I'm quite excited about that idea. I thought about buying one of those cameras for myself, but Josh is a better camera man then me. And I'd defer to his skills in any case.

I don't know why I'm making lists of topics. I know I'll just be writing about whatever I'm thinking about at the time. As the spirit dictates.

Update: Spectra Man DVDs showed up over the weekend. I'll have to watch these tonight and get some good Dr. Gori scenes for HELL.

Too much noise in my head

IMG_2703
Earlier this week I'd leeched a couple of Studio 4C shorts to the Avertec. Finally got around to watching them last night, some incredibly amazing stuff. Makes me look forward to the Black and White movie. It also made me go to CDJapan and buy the Amazing Nuts DVD where the shorts came from. I've got an itch to show these at HELL...

I've gotta sit down and animate Fairy Princess Yukio Mishima in Flash.

New policy at HELL

AnimeHELL Logo
I don't like the way AnimeHELL.org is going. I've been posting too many videos and not enough content. And by that I mean just interesting articles and reviews and just written bits. I need to bug folks like Dave and Surat and Chis into writing some reviews and articles and get some stuff up and posted. Maybe even Michael and Bruce, too.

Some ideas:
Get Surat to write up a review of Ringing Bell, or whatever he's doing over at Anime World Order.

Get Chris to write up a review of both of the Unico movies. Hell, I should ask Chris to go and do a whole lot of old skool reviews.

I'd like to get Dave to write something but I really don't know what to ask. Maybe I could get him to do a review of those new Ultra Man DVD box sets? Maybe something about Godzilla? I don't know. I should get on the phone with him and even see if he'd be interested in writing up anything.

I gotta bug Bruce for those paper mask ideas, too. Which reminds me I need to get to work on finishing up certain HELLthemed comix and bits that I've put on the back burner for too long now.

Stuff like the HELL NURSE KATIE FAN CLUB. Yeah, I really, really need to get my shit together. The sooner I can get this done the sooner I can have the ASK HELL NURSE KATIE page up, too.

So basicly I'm saying less video and more posting for animehell.org. Maybe I need to open up the discussion on the forum? Can you tell I'm getting frustrated by this?
