Well, I have no idea if it'll help or not, but what the heck. I'm posting stuff on Deviant Art again. We'll see if it helps or not. Or whatever.
UPDATE: Crips that's ugly.

Video on the cheap 1:25 PM
Recording became cheap. You didn't need a big pricey studio anymore to make a recording. Hell, you don't need a broadcast studio to make podcasts. Technology has rendered it cheap. Anybody with very little investment can make a good recording.
And it's happening to video as we speak.
You won't need public access television. You can make, edit and distribute video in your basement these days. Hell, I could, or should make a damned talk show in the front room with webcams and lapel microphones and mix the mess in computer.
And why the hell not do it now?
There's a question of studio space. How could you take someplace and turn it into a set? What are the possiblities of doing something like a talk show, or a kiddy show, or Kiddie a go go or any of the staples of early television? Sitting behind a desk with a blank wall behind you?

And it never seems to get where I'm going 8:51 AM
Went to sleep thinking about comics. Making comics, laying out pages, drawing them in my mind. Woke up dreaming that I worked as a film compositor in some industrial park. Weird.
Need to finish those Katie pages and get them posted this week. Maybe a holiday pin up or two, too.

Hell Nurse Katie Banner 1:24 PM
Changed Danno's Comics and Stories into the new Hell Nurse Katie site on Webcomics Nation. I'm thinking about doing the upgrade, too. Once we've got the book in print. Not too shabby, I think. I'll look at Drunk Duck, next.

Video Gaming 9:48 AM
I was browsing the gift guides and thought to myself that the cost of a new Xbox was about the cost of a cheap desktop computer. Of course you'd have to buy a graphics card to put into that desktop to play the games you could play on that new Xbox.
I wonder how much a new old Xbox costs. And if I could still buy one.
Of course I wanted an Xbox a while back and never got it. But I did get my PSP. And I've realized I'm not a gamer. I use my PSP for just about everything, mostly playing videos. But not so much for games. Weird.
I think I'll dig out my old PlayStation and hook it up this weekend.
Bonus: I got LATITUDE ZERO and MST3K Vol.12 last night AND Chad and Rachel sent me something from my Amazon Wishlist for Christmas. Coolness.

Post-it Note Self Portrait 8:59 AM
I'm working on OtakuHELL as the storefront for HELLnurse Katie. If all goes well I hope to have it all working by the beginning of 2008.
And with any luck we'll have something to sell by then.

It's not freezing, yet 2:47 PM
It was springtime warm on Saturday, then it was raining and cold on Sunday. Today it's grey, wet and cold. But it's not below freezing. So I guess that means it's not quite winter weather in Texas.

The Katie Kronicles 9:04 AM
I figure someday I'll need to write it up for the book, so I'll start by gathering my thoughts here.
I guess it's my fault. Unlike all the other AnimeHELL purveyors who's shows are a pure video experience, or at least it seems like it to me, I'm guilty of trying to make something more of my own shows.
Yeah, I'm just not satisfied showing video clips. I had to go and play around with the formula which works for everybody else. Maybe because it didn't seem to be working for me. I guess I'm still bummed that I never get to play the main rooms here in Texas. Yeah, I have main room envy.
And so, not content just to spool video, I started adding stuff to the show. I don't remember which show exactly, but I put Bruce on a microphone. Then the next show I put Michael on a microphone. Why? The same reason DJs put MCs on microphones at their shows, to entertain the crowd while they cue up the next track. And I found that if I have a couple of good people on the mics they play off the audience and each other. It's my opinion that engaging the crowd makes for a better show. And I'm too busy cuing up the video to be very effective at this.
But I'm digressing.
Taking a cue from William Castle
and stinking blogger lost the rest of that thought...

Working with ink 2:04 PM
While being sick from Thursday night until sometime Sunday I didn't get anything done. I really couldn't. And it bugged me Sunday just trying to get back to what I'd been working on for the HNK project. Frustrated and annoyed. Still, I'm back to it. I'm thinking I'll get out the two pages I was working on if not a third. And I'm thinking of a Lil' Nurse Katie comic, too. I'll mine some of the Lil AWA Noemi material and get a few pages from it.

Cut Up 9:48 AM
I posted a review of the new Negativland DVD over at AnimeHELL, I think I need to do more of this kind of post. Maybe a review of the new Peelander Z DVD is due next? Or maybe of review of some of the AVGeek discs. That'd be cool.
Which reminds me, there's a few new AVGeek discs I need to pick up.

Not really been too good a year 8:37 AM
Looking back at the last year, It ain't been the best. Getting sick after my trip to Cali sticks out as a real pain in the ass. As has the continuing problem of the gas issue at the Edstead. And the issue doesn't look like it's gonna be resolved anytime soon.
At least my health has gotten better.
AnimeHELL has been the source of both good and bad things in the last year. The good have been the trip to FanimeCon and the HELLnurse Katie project. The bad, well, the less said the better. Let's just say I came really close to walking away from it all.
Self knowledge is a painful thing.

Moods and Madness 10:03 AM
Wanda Gag (pronounced gog) wrote in her published diaries about "drawing moods." I thought I knew what she was talking about.
She wrote about her drawing moods, a compulsion to draw and draw and draw whatever she was compelled to draw at the given moment. And she was completely given to these moods when she had them.
I thought I also had drawing moods. But lately I've been calling it a madness. There is no doubt in my mind that this is a compulsion. Maybe even a type of addiction. But it is a thing that helps me, a coping mechanism. Does that make it a bad obsession?
The madness.

Sketchbooks and Sketchpiles 9:34 AM
Sketchbooks are like diaries, in a way. I've never kept a diary or a journal. Blogs are as close to that as I've come. And I'm sure somebody somewhere has deeper thoughts about blogs as public diaries and open journals. But sketchbooks are similar but different. Sketchbooks are a visual document showing how artists skills develop and change. The images themselves don't live in a vacuum. Visuals are taken from other images, other artists. It's theft, but it's not. I draw Mickey Mouse, but I change it, explore the construction, take the image apart and play with it. Until it's not Mickey Mouse any more. It's something new. This visual re-invention and evolution is the interesting part. It's how you can gauge an artist's growth. Or how they stagnate, and stop being interesting.
I'm going to annotate the pages in Sketchpile. My thinking is that the notes explaining the impetus behind the images will enhance your understanding of what I was trying to accomplish. I hope.
Long ago I stopped initialing and dating my sketches. It seemed like a vanity, and pointless considering my level of skill at the time I stopped. It was more important to me to draw more and more then to waste time leaving a mark or a date on the page. Putting together these pages I wish I'd had dated some of the material, if only to give myself a signpost of where I was when I was there. But the breadcrumbs are all gone. I have an approximate idea when these drawings were made, and that will have to do. Regrettably.
I've decided to use The Sketchpile project to make calendars at Lulu, too. But first I need to make a damn PDF for Lulu to print from.

I want candy 9:38 AM
At last night's HNK meeting Bruce brought up the idea of getting sponsors for OtakuHELL. Specifically we could get some of the Japanese candy sellers to furnish the candy we throw out to the kids. I'm intrigued. I wonder if there'll be any takers?
The madness of the brush continues...
I need copy for the back cover of The Sketchpile: "I was once told that we all have a million bad drawings in each of us. The Sketchpile is a sampling of the million or more bad drawings that have accumulated at my drawing board over the years. Most of these illustrations seeing the light of day for the first time here. Enjoy the many odd and mad visions committed to paper and culled for this collection from The Sketchpile."
That sounds like it'll work.

Traveling Medicine Show 7:55 AM
This morning's dream.
I'm sitting at a table in a group of tables on a dirt road. I'm playing a game. There's someone across the table holding up a board. On the board are pegs with numbers printed on them. I pick a peg off the board and the gamer pulls out a page and reads off of it. It's like a fortune and a riddle and I respond to each bit of cryptic business by making fun of it all. I start getting laughs from people sitting at other tables. Soon there's a big crowd around me and I'm putting on a show for them.
While this is going on someone has set up a tent around us. It's like a small circus tent. Bruce Lewis is there and he interrupts the game to get me to help set up the show. I grab an armload of wood and metal beams piled next to me at the table and snap them together into a stage. I'm not even finished with it as people start moving tables and chairs around the stage. A few people come up and help me assemble the rest of the stage while more help Bruce set up a table on the stage.
I pull myself onto the stage, then I wonder if I'm suppose to be up there. What if I'm not allowed on stage? Then Bruce tells me to bring him a large canvas folded up on the corner of the stage. I pick it up and I find that it's not canvas, it's red velvet. Bruce grabs a corner of the velvet and pulls it over the table on the stage. The edges of the velvet have a fancy gold tassel trim and in the center there's a large gold embroidery sign that says, "Medicine Show"
I turn around to look at the crowd, there's a few hundred people laughing and enjoying themselves. More people are coming into the tent in the back and looking for seats. So I start my spiel. "Ladies and Gentlemen. Welcome to the WILD WEST MAGIC LANTERN SHOW..." I start talking louder, there's a train passing by the tent and it's drowning me out. Then I realize it's not a train, it's my alarm clock. It's time to wake up.
I wonder where the heck that train was going.

Put away the summer clothes and set up a rack for storing my cold weather clothes and I'm seeing that I need to change my room, badly.
Never, ever, buy the "Milk Crates" from office supply stores. They're too damn cheap and don't hold crap for crap. Nearly all of the ones I bought have broken or warped under the weight of the crap I put in them. Worthless pieces of crap. Crap!

Jumbling Thoughts and Notions 2:22 PM
Trying to write the OniCon HELL Report for the AnimeHELL blog and I'm blanking. Can't think of what to write down. I've got lots to say, but can't seem to put it down in a coherent fashion. It doubly sucks that I don't have any video or photos of the event to include with the report. It's all tell and no show. I'll just write down some random crap and try to tie it all together somehow...

HELLnurse Katie Komix 10:05 AM
It seems like it's coming together. We're gonna have a planning meeting on Saturday, sometime. I talked to the King of Magical Girl Genre, Ed, and he said he had a few ideas. And Bruce talked to Katie and she gave it the green light. So, all we gotta do now is plug everything together and actually do the work of making a comic.

Post OniCon 1:13 PM
Gone to Houston and back and It cost me only a few hundred bucks to go in the end. But, hey, I had a good time and had a show. Or rather the show had me. Somehow the $60 Enterprise weekend special turned out to cost me $100. Why? I'm still not sure. Makes me not want to do any more trips with Enterprise. I'll go back to Avis, less freakin' hassles.
The Avertec mishap makes me want a new laptop, but I've been talking about getting a new button machine first. So far I'm not finding what I want.

Getting it together 10:13 AM
Reading up on the tradition of the American Spook Show I really really wish I could some how incorporate the ideas and gimmicks into OtakuHELL. But there's a few problems to doing something like this. Hauling around the props would be a hassle. Where we do our shows is pretty much up in the air, there are no stages and curtains to hide the "magic." We're usually stuck in panel rooms, with very little beyond a table and the AV equipment. Control of things like the lights and what not, well that's really beyond what we could do. And on top of all that I don't know stage magic. And of course all those things cost money and require people to help out with all the props and gags.
But then again, maybe I can simplify it or tweak the gags to make them cheap, portable and easy to pull off. Something to think about...
Gotta finish up packing tonight. Stop by Bruce and Mundee's and pick up the swag that Katie left behind. And there are buttons to be made. Oh, and I need to print some fliers before I leave.

To do listing 12:38 PM
Gotta get fliers made. DVDs need to be made. Editing needs to be done. I need to find more stuff to show. Eh. Seems like I go through this before every show.
Looks like everything on the OniCon end is ready. Just need to rent the car on Friday.
Alternative 3 and Charley Sez came in over the weekend. Plus there's the collecting of Japanese horror trailers to be done and Meatball Machine to be sorted out. I need to dig out some of those El Santo DVDs, too. Some good monster stuff in there to harvest. And while I'm at it I need to compile some horror trailers for the show. It'll be fun!

I started ripping trailers, Some bits will certainly make it into HELL. Which reminds me, I need to make some DVDs right now.
And before I forget, I need to get cracking on the OniCon flier. Geez, I suck.
Going with the spook show theme I think. Scary stuff, kids...

Halloween and Christmas and Thanksgiving, too 9:04 AM
I'm Christmas shopping and looking for tickets to fly home around Thanksgiving and Halloween is coming up and I'm gonna need some Halloween stuff for OniCon and I'm thinking about all this the last few days. Holidays.
Staci and Mom and Dad are covered. I need to look at Chad's wishlist. I think I've got something for Rick. No idea what to get Joel. Ed's covered. Mundee's covered. I'm at a loss for Bruce. Josh and Michael I think I know what I can get. Clarine and Chris I'm looking and thinking.
Ah jeez, I gotta work on stuff for the show on the 20th. Gotta get some money to Katie. Screen printing ink for the panties.

com and net 8:16 AM
In addition to tohoscope.org I now have tohoscope.com and tohoscope.net for the next couple of years. So the big question is what to do with 'em. What I'd like to do is somehow get a mirror set up for AnimeHELL with otakuhell.com. That'd be a start. Hosting is the real problem. I'd like to get a server set up at home, but I'm not sure I'm up to the task.
But I've got some ideas...

Pretty much have to go with what I've got at this point. If I can't get anything from Ed for a cover I'll fake it with what I have at hand. Maybe I'll swipe some art from Bruce?
Not that It'll be a small issue. No, we gots lots of material. I just hope I can fit it all into a neat package.
