And from the Bad Movies Yahoo Group:

Air Ducts; a rant.

Or: Why do buildings even bother to have hallways?

Among the many things I've learned over the years from Hollywood movies is this important fact; the best way to navigate your way through any building, especially an unfamiliar one, is through the air conditioning ducts.

This fact might not otherwise be apparent to the average person. I myself have wandered the hallways of unfamiliar buildings searching with mounting frustration, trying to find a particular office before becoming late for an appointment. This despite the fact that the floor is well laid out with clearly labeled offices, and signs pointing out the direction to go for a certain range of suite numbers, etc.

Not so when you travel via air duct! As anyone who's seen almost any action flick knows, once you get into the air ducts, you can find the room you are seeking in a matter of seconds. Are there signs with arrows inside the air ducts? No! Once in an air duct, people just *know* where to go. It's amazing. There are no signs, in fact there are no points of reference whatsoever. You're essentially inside a featureless maze.

And how do you get in there? Why, you simply pop off nearest convenient vent grill in whatever room you happen to be in; they snap right out. Sometimes they are even hinged like a door! This is the point where my confusion starts. They must have very different building codes in LA. In neighboring OC, I've never seen an air grill that didn't require a screwdriver to remove. Nor have I seen one with a hinge, which is really puzzling. Why is there not a hinge on something that's clearly expected to function as a door?

Leaving that behind, we come to my second point of confusion. I've never been in a room smaller than an auditorium that had an air conditioning vent I could fit anything larger than one arm into. The typical AC grill around here seems to be about 6 x 12 inches. Again, very different building codes up in Hollywood. Apparently that town requires even a tiny custodian closet to have an AC duct that a muscle-bound action star can hop into with ease. I recon we're talkingabout 2 foot by 3 foot, minimum.

Likewise for the ductwork. Oh, I've been in large office building and seen some huge central ducts in the HVAC equipment rooms. Often the duct literally has a door in the side of it, so service personnel can get inside the thing. Likewise have seen ducts in the ceilings that look like you could crawl thru them. But then these usually fan out to smaller ducts to feed the vents. You don't need a 2'x3' duct run to a 6"x12" vent.

Another thing… Ever seen the inside of an air conditioning duct? You know that fine, hard to wash off, soot-like dust that you get all over your fingers if you barely touch an air conditioning grill? Guess what's all over the inside of those ducts? They are BLACK with that super fine dirt that's too small for the filters to remove. If you could ever fit your ass into an AC duct, you would come out looking like a chimney sweep. So I'm figuring, the buildings depicted in these action movies must all be really, really new buildings. I'm thinking like, a week at most. The shinny, mirror-like duct insides look like a NASA clean room. Amazing.

As side note, at this point I'm wondering; Ducts are so clean and easy to navigate, why not make the whole building interior out of ductwork? None of this drywall and carpeting business, shiny galvanized steel floors, ceilings and walls is clearly the way to go.

Lastly there is the matter of stealth. Your average duct-crawling action scene usually involves the hero making an escape from imprisonment, or a surprise attack upon the bad guyz. Now, I must admit that I've never crawled through an AC duct (it's true!), but I have handled sheet metal before. And I happen to know that the slightest flexing of the stuff yields a huge sonic racket. You might as well be banging on a drum. I'm not clear on how 200 pounds or so of action star is able to silently scoot over many yards of sheet metal duct without a most horrific cacophony of banging metal sounds. Again, I can only assume vastly different building codes are involved.

That's all for now kids.
The next installment: The Universal Walkie-Talkie. Capable of simultaneous communication with all radio services including building maintenance, CB truckers, ham radio, police dispatch, fire and rescue, news reporters, aviation, marine, and possibly flying saucers. The 9/11 Commission will want to know about this device!

Monday was a long day. Ten hours at work, went to bed early. Still a bit queasy. Tuesday was the office dinner at Red Hot and Blue BBQ. And I had to stop at Allstate and pay for the next 6 months of car insurance. And I still have to get my laundry done, or at the very least get a washing maching put in to the house. Gotta get that number from Mundee and get it done.

Christmas soon. Need to get more done.

Soon.

Party'd out

Bruce and Mundee's annual Christmas party was the hit of the season. We ate, drank and caroled until we puked. Literally.

The wine caught up with me at 5am. I puked 5 times over the next hour. Ended up just sitting in the reclaimed chair because I didn't want to have to fall out of the loft just to get to the bowl in time. I think I dropped a pant size from all the toxic stuff coming out of me.

Spent the rest of Sunday just feeling queasy and shaky, but no real hang over or headaches.

But it was worth it, see you at next years party!

Very bad mood.

Then I get a call from Ed that I'm not needed at all. Turns out that the gas pipes are old and need to be replaced, so Ed needs to get a pumber to fix 'em before he can get the new stove put in. So, no new stove in the Edstead. At least for now

I wasted last night playing MarioWEEN DX, and that's about it. Gotta get those lil' smokies!

Here's my attempt at making a videoblog of this post!

Still working on the HELLtoon project and the HELL Videoblog. More as I get it done...

Weekend was quiet. Went to Old South for breakfest with Josh and Michael and Clarine and Chris and ate huge portions of buttermilk pancakes. Good stuff. Then we went to that Irish/Italian place that I can't spell or speak Saturday night with Josh, Michael, Keith, Brian and Rachel.

Oh yeah, we planned out some of the Bruce and Mundee X-Mas party details on Friday night. I'm in charge of Lil' Smokies!

Forgot about it being thursday until Michael and Josh called about going out to eat. Had dinner at La Isle and that pretty much took up the rest of the day.

Bruce's X-mas gift showed up at work, so I'm pretty much done for now. And I'm broke, too.

Spent a signifigant part of last night just moving video off my various hard drives and on to discs. I need to move the disc archive to a better, accessible space. Still can't find my ComicWorks install disc...

On the up side I'm drawing and inking more animation for the HELLtoon project. More to come...

Yesterday Ed went back on the night shift for Bank of America, so It was just me and the cats in that cold house.

And I didn't get alot done on the HELLtoon project. I did move the scans from the tablet to Renderfarm with the thumbdrive and did coverted to eps. And I figured out why I couldn't get the files to load in Moho. But even with all the files processed and ready for Moho I didn't do any animating. Guess I need to get to it tonight...

Chad just got the X-mas gifts I sent him, so with any luck I'll get Bruce's soon.

All in all I had a great time. Chris and Clarene and Megan and Scott and John and Ed all showed up ,too. I even got Bernd, the owner, to sing me a Heino song. Clarene even made me a little Kure Kure Takura.

Next time I order the Gulasch!

Work hard for living, wanted just to get paid
But, sure’d be stealing for a year and a day
Would like to see a little sunshine, just to guide my way
Would like to have a little peace of mind
That’s why I wanna say you better look out !

Trouble you can’t fool me I see you behind that tree
Look out! trouble you can’t fool me trying to get the ups on me
Trouble you can’t fool me I see you behind that tree
You want to jump on me

Trouble taught me a lesson I never never will forget
Now, he took my love, she ain’t paid it back yet
I had to find another just to take her place
And I sure do love her, I said we’re doing ok

So look out!
Trouble you can’t fool me I see you behind that tree
Look out! trouble you can’t fool me trying to get the ups on me
Trouble you can’t fool me I see you behind that tree
You want to jump on me

Well, you know, everyday can’t be sunday [that’s right!]
It’s a funny thing, it seem just before daylight is your darkest hour
And you know one thing [what’s that ? ] behind every silver lining, there isn’t a dark cloud
[and you just ain’t got time to go ’round subtracting and adding ’cause you’ll just be too late]
You know one thing ? [what’s that ? ]
Every time you get around a tree, you better stop and grab a brick [why ? ]
Old man trouble... laying and waiting on you

That’s what I wanna say...
Trouble you can’t fool me I see you behind that tree
Look out! trouble you can’t fool me trying to get the ups on me
Trouble you can’t fool me I see you behind that tree
You want to jump on me

Trouble took my money, cadillac’s gone
Best suit of clothes, all raised up in the closet, oh lord
But I’m so glad
Trouble don’t last ...always
You can’t fool me

Bear tracks, bear tracks, looking back at me
You'd better get your rifle before it's too late
The bear's got a little pig and its headed through the gate

Chorus
He's big around the middle, he's broad across the rump
Running ninety miles an hour, taking thirty feet a jump
Never been caught, Lord, he's never been treed
Some folks say he looks a lot like me

I saved up my money and I bought me some bees
They started making honey way up in the trees
I chopped down the tree but my honey's all gone
Ol' Slew Foot's done and made himself at home

[chorus]

Winter's coming on and it's forty below
River's frozen over now so where can he go
We chase him up the gully, run him in the well
Shoot him in the bottom just to listen to him yell

Yesterday was pretty quiet. I didn't do too much with the HELLtoon project mostly because I spent a few hours making a pot of Tacochilli and burning the Star Wars Holiday Special to DVD. It turned out very nicely, thanks for asking. Included on the disc were 58 Kenner Star Wars TV commercials that I intend to inflict on OtakuHELL.

Ed gave me one of those security cams for my birthday. I'm gonna mount it to a base/board and then hook it up to either a VCR or DVD recorder and shoot the audience at the next OtakuHELL. It's a sweet little cam, shoots in the dark and it's got a mono mic that picks up everything. Maybe I'll screw it into a hardhat and have POVhell-o-vision, or fix it to a plank and run through the con Sam Rami Evil Dead style. Ah, the possibilities...

Power Issues

Finally had an evening with the power on to work on the animation project. Moho doesn't seem to like the tablet PC, so I set up on Renderfarm. And surprise, it worked quite well. Now I just need to finish the actual drawings and render the whole thing out. Piece of cake.

Then I need to lean on Bruce for the Heino Cartoon.

Fun stuff.

I had a sneaking suspicion that something was wrong at the house, but it wasn't until I got home that I found the power was out, AGAIN.

So I called Ed to let him know and then I walked into the backyard and those cables were still there. Ed calls the power company and they say they'll have it fixed around 6pm. I decide to go and buy a torch instead of cursing the darkness. 6pm comes and goes and no power. So I get Ed and head over to Discount Electronics to kill some time, still no power. I finally end up at Josh and Michael's and we watch THE PUPPETOON MOVIE, which has lots of nightmare fuel.

I get tired and decided to just go home and go to bed. And just as I get there the power comes back on. AND IT STAYED ON ALL NIGHT!

Birthday swag!

Got HANZO THE RAZOR boxset from Josh and THE VAL LEWTON HORROR COLLECTION from Michael for my birthday. Thanks guys! Party at Edelweiss this saturday!

And the cool part was that Josh and Michael also took me out to dinner at Habachi 97 with Chris and Keith. I had a great time, too.

The wind knocked down a couple of phonelines or some sort of cable in to the back yard last night. There was a loud series of pops and surges that took out both of my towers and reset the reciever. I thought I'd lost my monitor and the KMV. Then about ten minutes later we lost all power. But only on our side of the street.

Couldn't sleep very well, I was worried I wouldn't wake up in time to go into work. Around 4:30 the power came back, I went and turned off the tv and turned the surgebars back on. Everything rebooted this morning, so I'm hoping that it's ok. We'll see tonight...
