animatics maybe 2:31 PM
You write a script. You turn that script in to a storybaord. Now it gets messy.
Since the point of all of this is to create a finished animated cartoon it helps to make a rough cut of the cartoon using the storyboards. So, how do we do that? Yeah, how exactly can we do that? Because I'm not too sure how to do that.
I was thinking that it may be possible to use the same software used to make flash slide shows to make an animatic. Since I've never used any of the free flash slide show creators I guess I need to try a few out and see if they can make something like an animatic.
The tool I'm gonna try first is Clipyard.
Windows Movie Maker could work, too. I'm sure there's an equivalent for mac and linux.
Xtranormal may work for creating an animatic.
more later...

adopting tools for other needs 1:50 PM
EZtoon and Pivot Stickfigure Animator could be used to make storyboards or animatics.
Pixton, Stripgenerator, and Make Beliefs Comix could possibly be used to make storyboards. All of these are online flash tools with click and drag interfaces. Pixton is similar to Pivot Stickfigure Animator in that the characters are puppets with independent parts that can be moved and manipulated. So, if you're not a cartoonist or claim to have no drawing ability this is probably the way to go.
But, really, you don't need to have any drawing skill to do a simple storyboard. Stick figures work for this, as long as it communicates to the animator what you want. That's really all that matters.

thoughts on the process 10:06 AM
Let's say you've got an idea for a cartoon. But you're not a cartoonist or animator. So you decide to find an animator to work with you. You've got to communicate your idea to the animator. How do you do that?
Script. Storyboard. Animatic. Soundtrack.
Okay. I admit I don't know much about making a script. I skip the script stage and go straight to thumbnailing the story out on paper and then cleaning it up and making a storyboard. A thumbnail script is still a script. It's all in the format.
My tool for thumbnailing? Post-It Notes. They're perfect for creating a quick story. And you can add or remove and change around pretty much everything as you go. The perfect tool for writing for a visual medium.

sxsw short time and $25 10:11 AM
Or I could do a feature, right? That's just a $40 entry fee. Because big is better, yeah?
Cripes. $375 to get in the door. Good thing I'm not the hanging out kind of person.
I don't know. Monsta? Maybe?
There are some problems with Monsta and kitteh. First, I never figured out a title for it. Calling it Monsta or Monsta and Kitteh isn't really gonna help it. It needs a good title to help it, and I'm still not sure what to call it. Sleeping. Slumbering Monster. Sleepy something something?
Dallas Film Society deadline is December 3rd.
It's too late to submit to the Dallas Video Fest. It starts next weekend.
