24 Hour Comics dot com: "On April 24th (that's 4-24-2004), cartoonists all over will face the 24 hour comics challenge. To help cartoonists face this challenge, some comic book stores, educational insitutions, and comics clubs are hosting special 24 Hour Comics Day events. They'll be providing cartoonists with a space to work, access to food and drink, and camaraderie. While some stores may set the cartoonists up in off-site locations, other stores will have the cartoonists work inside the store itself, so comics fans can gather and watch."

Gigantor father dies after fire at Tokyo home

Mainichi Interactive - Top News: "
Gigantor father dies after fire at Tokyo home

Cartoonist Mitsuteru Yokoyama, best known as the creator of the animation series Gigantor (Tetsujin 28-go), suffered serious burns and died after a fire broke out at his Tokyo home early Thursday, police said.

At around 6 a.m., a fire broke out at his home in the Chihaya district of Toshima-ku, Tokyo, and burned a futon mat where he was sleeping before his family extinguished it 15 minutes later, Tokyo police said.

He was rushed to hospital with serious burns and died late Thursday night. He was 69.

Noting that there were numerous cigarette butts in an ashtray in his bedroom, investigators said they suspect that the fire started because the artist failed to extinguish one of his cigarettes.

Yokoyama's 66-year-old sister who was sleeping in the neighboring room woke up after hearing a strange noise, and went into his room to find that his futon mat and clothes were burning, she was quoted as telling police. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, April 15, 2004)"

I got Stripes
Written by Johnny Cash and Charlie Wiliams

On a Monday, I was arrested
On a Tuesday, they locked me in the jail
On a Wednesday, my trial was contested
On a Thursday, they said "Guilty," and the judge's gavel pelled

I got stripes, stripes around my shoulders
I got chains, chained around my feet
I got stripes, stripes around my shoulders
And them chains, them chains, they're bout to drag me down

On a Monday, my mama come to see me
On a Tuesday, they caught me with a file
On a Wednesday, I'm down in solitary
On a Thursday, I start on bread and water for a while

On a Monday, I got my tripe depression
On a Tuesday, they caught me with a file
On a Wednesday, I‘ working digging dishes
On a Thursday I begged them not to knock me down again

Doraemon

I want one!
Toy maker Bandai Co. has brought popular Doraemon a little closer to life by producing a robot version of the cartoon character that can converse with humans.

The firm plans to put "Doraemon the Robot" on the market at the end of March. The product is the first in Bandai's project to "create a real Doraemon by 2010."

The robot, which stands 26.5 centimeters tall and weighs 1.3 kilograms, uses the latest voice-recognition technology and sensors to make its interaction with humans unique.

It can use about 750 words spoken with the voice of the animated version of Doraemon, and can recognize nine human words including "Doraemon," "Let's play," and "Mouse." When someone says, "Doraemon, let's play," for example, the robot responds by asking, "What shall we do?"

Since the robot contains 10 types of light and inclination sensors, it can tell when someone has hit it on the head, and says, "Hey, that hurts." When it is stroked, it says, "If you're going to stroke me I wouldn't mind a bean-jam pancake as well."

When a registered password is spoken, Doraemon's prized pocket opens. The robot's movements can also be controlled with a remote controller modeled in the shape of a bean-filled pancake.

An added feature of the Doraemon robot is that it is equipped with a clock and calendar, and can remember important events such as people's birthdays and even when it is time to put the rubbish out.

Bandai President Takeo Takasu said he wanted to continue to improve the robot.

"In the future, we want to add a function that enables it to distinguish between people, and get even closer to the real Doraemon," he said. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, Jan. 15, 2004)

: "The Japanese school system is a funny thing; exams happen three weeks before the term ends, meaning three weeks of students rather unwilling to learn anything new. That being so, I decided to corrupt my high schoolers in the most amusing, English-oriented manner possible. I made a short class on American comics with artwork and examples of popular comic books and comic strips. Then came the exciting part: making your own American-style comic!"

Now that's a culture jam!!!

Horsepower Currency?

"A new currency to commemorate popular Japanese animated character Astro Boy is set to be distributed in the Takadanobaba area of Tokyo's Shinjuku-ku on Wednesday.

The currency, which comes in 10, 100, and 200 "horsepower" notes, will be distributed by a planning committee consisting of local store and nongovernmental organization members, as well as local Waseda University students.

The notes were designed with the intention of supporting activities contributing to the local community. They will be able to be used for a limited time at local participating stores, with respective values of 10, 100, and 200 yen.

Planning committee officials will supply the notes to volunteer organizations and they will be valid for purchases at about 100 stores from Astro Boy's birthday on April 7, to Sept. 20.

The cost of issuing the notes will be covered by donations from businesses.

Astro Boy, a creation of the late cartoonist Osamu Tezuka, was given the birthplace of the "Science Ministry" in Takadanoba. In Tezuka's original "Astro Boy" comic, the robot with 100,000 horsepower strength was created on April 7, 2003. (Compiled from Mainichi and wire reports, Japan, April 6, 2004)"

Kuretake Brush Pen

Kuretake Brush Pen: "Technology meets tradition in this sumi brush fountain pen. The Kuretake Brush Pen is exquisitely designed in Japan, with super-fine nylon bristles for smooth, controlled strokes. It's supplied with three jet black ink cartridges"

I've read in forums where inkers swear by these Brush Pens. And it's true, I've had a few of these in the past, except I've never payed $30 to $40 for one. It's a nice Brush Pen and the ink is of high quality and works well with illustration work. My only complaint is that the ink reservior doesn't hold alot of ink...

Niji Water Brush Pens - Green Jade Oriental Art Supplies - BW-1 BW-2 BW-3

: "Niji Water Brush Pens are unsurpassed in terms of value, quality, and convenience.

The cartridge reservoir can be filled with liquid ink or left over sumi by squeezing the sides of the brush body, inserting the absorbent top into a pool of ink, and releasing. Once your cartridge is filled, simply reattach the durable, nylon filament tip.

This product gives you the actual feel of a brush, producing stokes almost indistinguishable from those made with a fine brush. The small brush is perfect for haiku, the medium tip is perfect for practicing calligraphy on the go, and the large brush allows you to create delicate sumi-e works as if you were in the studio. "

Crap, I wished I'd picked up more of these when I had a chance. The small size is perfect for inking and it's easy to clean and refill! Get one and try it out yourself!

Into Submission...

Bruce mentioned it the other day, "Who gets rich creating comics?" Unless you're high on the foodchain even popular cartoonists aren't making ends meet. Being published doesn't mean you'll be able to quit your day job. There's an article in the latest Comics Journal listing cartoonists who're now destitute, homeless, etc...

It's just another sign that the comics industry is on it's last legs.

So, why are there so many folks trying to get in? Look at these postings in Digital Webbing's Talent Search:

Looking for an artist for Megatokyo comic style ongoing story. No pay upfront. Will collaborate on how to make money with complete project.
• 03/13 • CONTACT: deishawn2003@yahoo.com

Geez, Megatokyo? So you just want pencils? No finished inks? For Spec? Good luck!

Seasonesed or Unseasoned We're looking for those with an ANIME/MANGA approach to do an episode of a sci-fi webcomic thriller We're not looking for the kiddie stuff that's flooded the market. We're looking for something more adult or sophisticated along the lines if Masumune Shirow , Satoshi Urushihara, Kevin Lua (Vampi) to Adam Warren. If your work is pretty similar to that of any of those previously mentioned you should be fine.THis is non-paying UNITL distibution online or print
• 03/13 • CONTACT: jedi5@wanadoo.fr

There's so much I could say about seasoning here, you want hot&spicy, BBQ or new RANCH seasoned artists? Or we'll take any bland artist that comes our way. Again, no money! It's on Speculation....

I'm need a manga or an American-manga artist to draw 6 pages for a comic submission to image comics. $9.50 per page. I'm also looking for an artist who will at least devote 1 year worth of drawing (6 issues) and I am willing to conitnue pay for other pages to be drawn. (I will not pay for character concepts.)
• 03/13 • CONTACT: ARHicks00@hotmail.com

Dude! I'm a need a manga, too! At least this guy is willing to pay, course that page rate isn't gonna really attract anybody will any real talent. The part about not paying for character concepts sends a distinct warning vibe...

Need one artist (pencils, inks, letters, finishing)in the anime/manga for an accepted story. Pay will be based upon sales. Story already approved. Story is fantasy based (ie D+D) and will be four issues. Please send one to two examples of sequential work to myself and to Rod Espinosa, submissions editor of Antarctic Press
• 03/13 • CONTACT: ironminotaur@grandecom.net

I like that, "one artist in the anime/manga," it sounds like a recipe. "Take one artist and gently fold artist into anime/manga mixture...." Man, I must be hungery from that seasoned or unseasoned artist comment..... OH Hey! Rod Espinosa! I love that guy's work! So why is Rod screwing around with comics proposals and comics business administration crap? Rod, go back to what you do best! Writing and drawing comics!!! Oh, wait...there's no money in that....

Moetan: English the fun way!

Dig those crazy phrases: "Dahhhhhhhh! Don't launch lots of expensive missiles too quickly." and "I met my brother after all this time. He had forgotten his purpose to destroy the earth." and most discriptive, "They say the lunatic people edit the English word book." Too right!
